NYX Macaron Lippies: Review and Swatches

I have been waiting for AGES to do this post! Between working, a lack of sun, and other questionable timing, I hadn’t had a chance to try out these beautiful macaron inspired lipsticks from NYX. Guys, I’ve been very patient waiting to try these out until I was able to take pictures first 😉

Price: $6.00

Amount of Product: 0.16 ounces

Animal Testing: NYX is cruelty free

There are 12 colors in total, and I purchased eight shades including Violet (medium purple), Black Sesame (grey), Citron (yellow), Pistachio (mint green/teal), Coconut (white), Earl Grey (light blue), Blue Velvet (medium blue), and Key Lime (bright green). The other four colors include Chambord (black), Rose (pale pink), Orange Blossom (pastel orange), and Lavender (pastel lavender). The reason I picked my eight colors is because I felt they were the most unusual of all the choices. For instance, light pinks and oranges are more common colors in general, and I feel like similar colors could be found within other brands and probably NYX itself too. I also didn’t choose Chambord because I already have a black lipstick. And while I had a difficult decision to make between Lavender and Violet, the darker purple tones of Violet appealed to me.

The first thing I noticed about these when I swatched them on my arm was how very creamy they were. These are very soft, smooth, and creamy upon application which has it’s pros and cons. On the plus side, they don’t tug at all when you go to apply them, and they don’t give you a thick or dry feeling. This is nice as you continue to wear them throughout the day. On the other hand, very creamy lipsticks lend themselves to travelling on your lips more and can give you that overly slippery feeling. Some of that slippery feeling dissipates as you wear them through the day. I think it would be helpful to use a lip liner with these to eliminate some of that slip and patchiness of some of these shades.

Another nice feature of these lipsticks is that they have a click-lock mechanism when you twist the product up and down. So when you apply, the bullet won’t be pushed down, and when they’re closed, the product is locked in place so it won’t roll up and get squished in the cap. Also, this packaging features a clear section in the middle where you can see the color.

Most of the shades I chose went on well. The pigmentation is nice, but it isn’t necessarily full coverage and opaque with one swipe for every color. Some shades were a little patchy. The two shades in particular that were a little more difficult to work with were Coconut (white) and Citron (yellow). They were a little more streaky than the others and I had some trouble making them look super smooth especially on my top lip where the darkness of my lip lines was showing through somewhat.

Overall, I’m so happy with these lipsticks! Having fun color options available at the drugstore is really awesome since you guys may know I’ve been wanting some crazy colors for quite some time. And while you may be thinking “oh there’s no way I’ll ever need any of these colors”, just consider mixing them with your other lipsticks to make entirely new lip color creations! I hope this information and the photos below are helpful for you!

The lip photos were taken in direct sunlight, and the face photos were taken in the shade so you can see the difference in how they appear in different lighting 🙂

What do you think of these crazy colors? Are you going to be trying these for yourself? What are your favorites?

  1. I can’t believe I missed this post! Good thing Twitter is around! While the purple one seems the most wearable, I like the blue ones on you (Earl Grey & Blue Velvet). I’ll definitely be picking up the green one for St. Patricks Day next year, can wait! 🙂 Come to think of it, you could come up with a ton of fairy themed makeup looks with these… Sometimes I skim model mayhem to check out the crazy makeup some artists come up with. Fun!

    1. Thank you lovely!! I do that with some posts too, it’s like wait how did this pass me by?! Just a lot to look through I guess. They are fun though and perfect for those special events especially since they are actually inexpensive too. I’ll have to check that out though, I haven’t heard of it!

  4. I do like the purple one … It looks really nice on you! I definitely wouldn’t have the guts to wear any of those shades – I’d look rareee! I wonder if any other brands will be releasing their own line of coloured lipsticks!

    1. Thank you lovely! Yeah they definitely aren’t your every day shades haha. That would be interesting to see since drugstore priced brands don’t typically offer such things!

    1. Thanks! Yeah I was going to try and mention a favorite but couldn’t pick haha. Although I definitely think Violet is probably the most “normal” color of the bunch. I love it though 🙂
